Hannah England

My name is Hannah (pronounced like "Honda" without the "D" or "Hannukah" without the "kuh"), and I've been named that only a little bit longer than I have been making art. My mother remembers toddler me cutting an alligator out of construction paper, meticulously detailing every toe, and says she knew then that I would be an artist. The alligator was, incidentally, eating a duck, so she probably also caught onto what a weird sense of humor I would have. I went to university in 2008-2012 to make children's books, ended up taking a detour into the world of graphic design, and am now journeying back to my roots in creative, illustrational storytelling by working on a graphic novel called Lampblack, and writing little stories that I want to soon turn into published children's books.

I was a fantasy/sci-fi kid, but as an adult those genres have taken kind of a twist in my head and landed in a kind of delightful surrealism. I like making art that gives people a feeling of chill, while also including a thread of the odd, maybe even the uncomfortable. I attribute this to me growing up still loving the whimsical and fun things while also having to face the realities of life. It's like a dark chocolate, a tad bitter, but still sweetly delicious.
